  • GAP-Biosciences is open to all South Africans The winner of the competition will be incubated in Gauteng at The Innovation Hub in Pretoria or selected partner incubator in other provinces.

  • The competition is open to all South African Citizens or permanent residents (individuals, small teams and start-ups)

Conditions of the Competition

  • An individual can only be a member of one team that is part of the GAP-Biosciences programme/ competition. This will curb real or perceived conflicts of interest between plans and will help avoid the perception of a lack of genuine commitment to one particular plan and business opportunity.
  • The following are not qualified to participate:
    a. Well-established and funded companies with business plans and commercialisation strategies
    b. Individuals and teams that have won any business plan competition in the last 5 years.
    c. Members of the GAP-Biosciences programme steering committee, advisory panels or adjudication panels, and their immediate families.
    d. Individuals already in the TIHMC incubation are not eligible to enter the competition
  • Commercially viable technologies are not suitable for the programme.
  • At the time of entry of and during the GAP-Biosciences competition, individuals and/ or teams that have already secured funding from other local and international investors MUST disclose the investor(s), amounts and other relevant information that will impact their participation on this programme.
  • Teams that have entered another business plan competition MUST disclose this at the time of entry into or during the competition.
  • Once the teams attend the executive training programme, the teams may not withdraw from the programme.
  • Semi-finalists MUST attend the whole executive training program offered as part of the competition, to be considered for final adjudication.
  • The seed funding paid to the winning individuals or teams, as part of the competition by partnership, and/ or sponsors does not constitute an investment with expectation of equity in the opportunity.
  • The seed fund that the winning team will receive will be transferred to the registered company’s bank account, upon agreeing on deliverables. Funds will be transferred in advance for each milestone.
  • Prizes are not transferable.
  • The Innovation Hub reserves the right to change the programme/ competition Official Rules at any time in its sole discretion, and to suspend or cancel the programme/ competition or any entrant’s participation in the programme/ competition.

Intellectual Property

  • Each entrant retains ownership of all intellectual property rights that were held by the entrant prior to submission of the opportunity.

  • Each entrant is responsible for ensuring that their entry does not infringe on third-party intellectual property rights.

  • Each entrant must hold the necessary rights to utilise any third-party intellectual property in the way proposed in their submission. The detail and documentation in this regard should be submitted together with the application.

The GAP-Biosciences faculty will resolve situations not covered by these rules, and their decision will be final. The competition organisers reserve the right to amend these rules without notice, to clarify the competition requirements or to cater for an unforeseen situation.


  • Only The Innovation Hub and Emory University GAP-Biosciences team members, assigned mentors, and selected panel of judges will have access to your plans. These judges are essentially professional venture capital investors, and venture philanthropists in some cases, who regularly deal with confidential information in the normal course of their businesses. Your ideas, technologies, plans, and all documents pertaining to them will be treated with care, respect, and confidentiality. In the unlikely event that a judge has real conflict of interest, they will be requested to remove themselves from judging that plan.

  • Your plan or a part thereof can be marked as “confidential”. Should you wish to, you may also request that the judges give you back the hard copy of your plan after you have completed your presentation.

  • Take care NOT to include any confidential information in the executive summary of your idea that you include with your entry forms, as this may be used in public documentation relating to the competition.
